| During the Eaton fire in the Altadena neighborhood of Los Angeles County, California, firefighters are on the scene as an apartment complex burns. |
The fierce winds that fueled wildfires in the American city of Los Angeles have largely subsided, enabling firefighters to advance in their efforts to put out the fire. Five people were murdered by the destructive wildfires, which also forced thousands of LA residents—including Hollywood stars and celebrities—to evacuate.
A large area of over 250 residences was destroyed, making the city's Altadena neighborhood one of the worst affected. Less than ten of the roughly 70 wall-to-wall houses that jutted out over the Pacific Ocean in Malibu seemed to be intact.
The LA Times reports that 2000 buildings were reduced to ashes. There were orders for the evacuation of at least 130,000 residents. The fire was described as "a little bit like Armageddon" by a resident of Los Angeles to the BBC.
Pasadena resident Tyler Bridges told the outlet that strong winds of up to 137 km/h caused the fire to begin. He claimed that with such high wind speeds, the fire could not be contained. "Ash was pouring down. Ash would slam into your mouth, eyes, and face when you went outside. You're coughing, and it's difficult to breathe," he continued.
"The firestorm is the big one," said Karen Bass, the mayor of Los Angeles, during a press conference. On Thursday morning, there were at least six different wildfires raging around Los Angeles County. Three were declared "0% controlled," including the smaller Sunset Fire in the Hollywood Hills, the Eaton Fire in the east, and the Palisades Fire in the west.
The fires scorched the homes of Hollywood actors Adam Brody and Leighton Meester as well as Billy Crystal's. Over 100,000 people were compelled to leave their houses, including celebrities like Jamie Lee Curtis, Mandy Moore, and Maria Shriver.
After living in their Pacific Palisades house since 1979, movie actor Billy Crystal and his wife Janice declared that it had been ruined. "We are heartbroken of course, but with the love of children and friends we will get through this," they responded. Paris Hilton, a media figure, said she was "heartbroken beyond words" after witnessing her Malibu beachside home "burn to the ground on live.
At a news conference, Los Angeles County's emergency management director, Kevin McGowan, announced that the city had experienced a natural disaster. In the meantime, about 250,000 people in southern California were without electricity.
More than 1,400 firefighters have been sent out by the state to fight the fires, according to Governor Gavin Newsom. Washington State was sending 146 personnel, and Oregon was sending 300 firemen.
The projected damage caused by the fires to the city is $57 billion.
